Seems to be a pretty good Lesser Scaup wing pattern?
Nice amount of restricted black on nail
peak on head seems to far forward
black on nail can look larger at times, confusingly so! Maybe due to water on bill?
head shape just before a dive
In the field it looks to be slightly larger than a Tufted Duck and the mantle has very faint vermiculations, views are alright probably around 500 m away from Garganey hide
Is this what a Scaup x Lesser Scaup looks like?!
just looked at 100s of scaup x less scaup on tinternet none seem to match this bird. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteA bird looking exactly like this at Arram, site of the long staying Ring-necked Duck on Easter Sunday.
ReplyDeleteZing- where have you found these photos? Got a link?
ReplyDeleteLee- thats interesting, got any photos of it or know of anyone that might?
Cheers
Garry Taylor was there after me and was told by a guy called Nathan to check it out. Interestingly, it appeared to stick closely to the Ring-neck, which was displaying to several of the female tufties on site.
DeleteCheers Lee, will ask Garry and Nathan if they have any photos
DeleteHi tim
ReplyDeleteI did a search on google. scaup x lesser scaup results are amazing but nothing matches your bird.
try it,they all lack the upper wing feature plus other points.
Have you considered Tufted Duck x Lesser Scaup? Or RND x Lesser Scaup?
ReplyDeleteZing- Can't see a proper hybrid just Lessers or Greaters or tuftie hybrids, have you got a specific link?
ReplyDeleteAndrew- I'd expect Lesser x Tuftie to show more black on the nail and probably white in the primaries, RND x Lesser would be pretty mega over here and too me this bird doesn't show RND features

I would suspect then that this is a Scaup x Lesser Scaup hybrid.
